Serve On A Board Or Commission

Advisory Boards and Commissions recommend policy to the City Council and advise the Council on a variety of diverse issues. Golden Valley residents who are interested in becoming more active in city government are encouraged to apply for positions on the City's Advisory Boards and Commissions. There are also opportunities to represent Golden Valley on a number of Joint Powers and Cooperative Agencies.

Joint Powers and Cooperative Agencies

The City of Golden Valley participates in a number of cooperative efforts with other governmental agencies and nonprofit organizations. The City Council appoints citizens, staff, and Council members to represent the City on these commissions, councils, and boards of directors.

Joint Water Commission

The Joint Water Commission is a joint powers board created by the Cities of Crystal, Golden Valley, and New Hope to purchase water from the City of Minneapolis and develop the infrastructure to deliver that water to their communities. The JWC oversees management of the three Cities' unique water supply and storage system to provide its member cities with a secure, reliable, cost-effective water supply.

Northwest Community TV Board of Directors

Oversees the operations of Northwest Community TV, which provides public and government cable access programming and local news from the cable TV studio at 6900 Winnetka Ave in Brooklyn Park. The City recommends one member for appointment by the Cable Commission.

Meets monthly, first Wednesday, 7:30 am, 6900 Winnetka Blvd, Brooklyn Park. Sixteen members (one representing Golden Valley). More information at www.nwct.org.

Northwest Hennepin Human Services Council (NHHSC)

Provides planning and coordinating for 15 northwest cities on human service delivery. More information at www.nwhhsc.org.

Advisory Commission

Through monthly presentations and surveys of issues such as drug and alcohol abuse, senior services, mental health services, child care, physical and sexual abuse, and emergency services, the Advisory Commission sets goals and priorities for area human service needs.

Meets monthly, third Thursday, 7 pm. Twenty-four members (two representing Golden Valley).

Board of Directors

Oversees the budget and staffing for the Council.

Meets monthly, third Wednesday, 9 am. Fifteen members (one representing Golden Valley, plus one alternate).

Northwest Suburbs Cable Communications Commission

Oversees the cable communications franchise agreement for 10 suburbs in the northwest metropolitan area of the Twin Cities.

Meets quarterly, second Thursday, 7:30 am, 6900 Winnetka Blvd, Brooklyn Park. Twenty members (two representing Golden Valley, one of whom must be a Council Member). More information at www.nwsccc.org.
