Current Problems

The Report Team considered these iseas to be current problems, or administrative issues to be dealt with short term rather than long term. (See also The Complete List and Other Issues.)

  1. Educate citizens "beautification" seminars for homeowners -environmental specialists to help residents with home projects-give out drought resistant seed -environmentally friendly home landscaping and yard care practices-animal resistant plants-reduced fertilizer use-water usage* [20]
  2. Ponds and creeks - enhance, better plantings - aerate-stencil storm grates * [16]
  3. Recycling - convenience-provide better containers, better service-provide pick up of large appliances-city do it too* [14]
  4. Brush and leaf pick-up for one more weekend.-longer hours-maybe city compost site* [9]
  5. Noise walls -Perpich Center students could do murals on sound barrier walls* [2]
  6. Enforce the codes we have (regarding RV parking, putting garbage cans inside, nuisance properties etc)-outside storage is an issue!! [14]
  7. City garden opportunities -sponsor a garden club- more city tree planting - landscape architecture - xeroscape - use landscape gardeners [13]
  8. Garbage pickup -. Excess noise and pollution - Consolidate to 1 or 2 service providers -pay through taxes [12]
  9. Animals-wildlife - raccoons? -Deer?-need regional solution- Geese? [9]
  10. Litter - Clean streets and parks-use citizens-have doggie bags-set plastic bag recycle bins in parks as a source of doggie bags-year-round trash cans in parks [7]
  11. Utilities - bury all (to beautify city) [6]
  12. Animals - domestic -barking of dogs - running of cats - defecating of dogs [6]
  13. Educate about recycling - how to, within city and within home [4]
  14. Air pollution - monitor - check local emissions-speed limits? [3]
  15. Compost -Allow backyards to have two compost bins. [3]
  16. Noise pollution reduction [3]
  17. Outdoor burning - ban [3]
  18. Establish strict regulations for companies/businesses to maintain and pick up grounds around their structure. [2]
  19. Involve children-Service learning projects in schools to have real life situation to discuss environment and take care of trees, etc.-Earth Day! [2]
  20. Light pollution -Lower, more downtown-style street lights with less light output; reduce overall mandated lighting, as in car lots, commercial areas [2]
  21. Sign ordinance -Stricter ordinance on temporary, home-made signage that businesses stick on corners, etc. Gives the area a low class, cheap image. [2]
  22. Have a gypsy moth plan to preserve mature trees in Golden Valley.
  23. Improve mosquito control
  24. Light pollution
  25. Make sure new residents get a welcome packet that includes the city rules and environmental information
  26. Street reconstruction- Put in more topsoil before the sod and use better sod when redoing the streets. Watering didn't make the difference!
