Native American History in Golden Valley

Time Capsule—Be A Part Of Tomorrow, Today

Submit your ideas by May 13
The 125th Anniversary Time Capsule will contain artifacts reflective of contemporary Golden Valley to be opened by residents at a future date. Golden Valley residents are welcome to contribute ideas about the design and location of the capsule as well as items or materials to be included inside. Email suggestions to Volunteer Coordinator Sandy Werts, mail them to her at Brookview Community Center, 200 Brookview Parkway, Golden Valley, MN 55426, or call her at 763-512-2341. Include your name, address, telephone number, and e-mail address. 

Tour of Former Golden Valley Lutheran College Campus

Saturday, May 14, 2 – 4 pm
@ Perpich Center for Arts Education

The campus housing the Perpich Center for Arts Education has been a Golden Valley landmark since the days it was home to Golden Valley Lutheran College (GVLC). Join community members as well as former alumni and staff on a tour the buildings and grounds, and learn what is going on at Perpich today and what might be left of the former GVLC campus. A short program will commemorate GVLC and feature a performance by current Arts High School students. Free event. Please RSVP to Jeannie Iverson, Perpich Center Librarian, at 763-591-4741.

Historical Society Display at Golden Valley Days

@ Brookview Park (small picnic pavilion), 200 Brookview Parkway
The Golden Valley Historical Society will display artifacts at Golden Valley Days in the small brick pavilion at Brookview Park in celebration of Golden Valley’s 125th Anniversary. The Society’s display will include aerial photographs, still photos, neighborhood maps, the locations of homes at least 100 years, DVD histories of Golden Valley (for purchase), and numerous other items of community heritage. Be sure to include this stop in your Golden Valley Days activities.

Golden Valley History Tour

Saturday, May 21, 2 pm
Pick-up points @ Golden Valley City Hall and Brookview Community Center

Step onto a 1950s vintage transit bus and take a trip back in time to sites and buildings important to Golden Valley’s history. Tour limited to 50 people; advanced registration required. Cost: $10. Send check payable to Golden Valley Historical Society to 7800 Golden Valley Road, Golden Valley, MN 55427. Include name, address, and day and evening phone number for each person attending.

@ Brookview Park

In celebration of Golden Valley’s 125th anniversary, the fifth annual Ice Cream Social, sponsored by the Golden Valley Bridge Builders, will feature the First John Philip Sousa Memorial Band and free Sebastian Joe’s ice cream. The First John Philip Sousa Band captures the spirit of bands at the turn of the 20th century through music that was played and performed in that era as well as some newer music. Bring lawn chairs or a blanket.

Diamond Luncheon, Honoring 75-Year Residents of Golden Valley

Golden Valley’s 125th Anniversary Planning Team is sponsoring a historical essay contest for students in the 5th and 6th grade. Winners will have their essays posted on the Golden Valley City website and will receive $50 for first prize and $25 for second prize. Entries are due Oct 13.
