Douglas Drive Reconstruction Project Progressing Steadily
This past week, crews completed final paving on Douglas Dr (County Rd 102) between Medicine Lake Rd (County Rd 70) and Duluth St (County Rd 66). They will now focus on rebuilding Douglas Dr between Duluth St and Golden Valley Rd, beginning roundabout construction at the Golden Valley Rd intersection, and starting reconstruction between Frontage Rd and Hwy 55.
Medicine Lake Rd To Duluth St
Landscaping crews are placing sod along boulevards on Douglas Dr between Medicine Lake Rd and Duluth St and on Duluth St between Douglas Dr and Adair Ave. Residents and businesses who receive the new sod will get notifications from the City of Golden Valley or Hennepin County on sod maintenance and care.
Duluth St To Golden Valley Rd
Weather permitting, soil improvement work is expected to be complete by next week on Douglas Dr between Duluth St and Golden Valley Rd. Three small segments remain for crews to subcut and grade: Canadian Pacific railroad crossing, Knoll Street, and Phoenix Street.
Driveway, curb, and gutter work continues south of the railroad crossing. Crews will continue concrete work south toward Golden Valley Rd over the next couple of weeks, then follow with paving.
Golden Valley Rd To Frontage Rd
Utility work continues to lead construction activities between Golden Valley Rd and Frontage Rd as crews continue to make significant progress replacing and burying public and private utility service lines. Once completed, crews will begin rebuilding the roadway for the new roundabout.
Crews also began recycling road debris at Golden Valley Rd just north of the CenterPoint Energy building. The asphalt and concrete removed during the reconstruction project is crushed into gravel. The recycled material is then used as one of the underlying layers for new pavement. This recycling lowers costs and pollution, as recycled debris reduces the need to mine and transport new gravel to and from worksites. Recycling is expected to continue for several weeks.
Frontage Road To Hwy 55
On Aug 10, crews will begin storm sewer work on southbound lanes between Frontage Rd and Hwy 55. All traffic will shift to the northbound lanes and be reduced to a single lane in each direction. Vehicles, including large semi-truck trailers, will still have access to Frontage Rd. This new lane configuration is expected to be in place for a few months. Please allow for extra time to travel through the area.
Country Club Dr
Also on Aug 10, crews will begin reconstruction at the intersection of Country Club Dr and Douglas Dr, and at the right turn entry point from Hwy 55. The intersection will be turned into a cul-de-sac, and an exit lane to Hwy 55 will be created. Both access points will close until work is complete in the fall.
Work Zone Road Conditions
Please remember, throughout the work zone crews have removed pavement and are working with dirt. This means the roads will be more challenging to drive through. While we continue to try to keep things drivable, weather – especially heavy rains – can create challenges. We appreciate everyone’s patience and understanding. If you have questions or concerns regarding the road conditions, please contact the project hotline at 612-543-3485.
Getting Around And Staying Safe
You can still travel around this area, including to get to local businesses. It’s important to follow speed limits and signs, and stay alert, including during evenings and weekends. Traffic changes, construction crews, equipment, and work areas near the roadway will require extra attention from road users.
The official detour for through traffic uses Duluth St (County Rd 66), Hwy 100, and Hwy 55. There are alternative routes for local traffic, including Winnetka Ave (County Rd 156), Medicine Lake Rd (County Rd 70), and the completed segments of Douglas Dr.
