In honor of Golden Valley’s 125th anniversary this year, a group of citizens is creating a time capsule containing selected artifacts reflective of contemporary Golden Valley. Golden Valley residents are urged to participate in a number of ways, says Blair Tremere, project coordinator.

The organizing group would like Golden Valley residents to contribute ideas about the design and location of the time capsule as well as suggest general categories of materials or specific items that could be included in the time capsule, says Tremere.

The time capsule will be opened by residents 25 years from now, in 2036. If you have ideas to share or would like to help with the project, contact Sandy Werts, Golden Valley’s volunteer coordinator, at SWerts@goldenvalleymn.gov or at Brookview Community Center, 200 Brookview Parkway, Golden Valley, Minnesota 55426. Contributors should include their name, address, telephone number, and e-mail address.

The deadline for submitting ideas is April 11, 2011.

The time capsule project is just one of many commemorative activities in place for Golden Valley’s 125th anniversary. A group of volunteers, coordinated by Marshall Tanick, is planning for events throughout the year. Most will have a historical theme. To get involved, contact Werts at SWerts@goldenvalleymn.gov or 763-512-2341.

The Golden Valley Federated Women’s Club (GVFWC) is collecting pajamas in October to support the General Federated Women’s Club of Minnesota’s Domestic Violence Awareness project.

The GVFWC will collect pajamas for the Home Free Shelter, a local organization that supports women and children who are fleeing from domestic abuse. In 2009, the shelter housed 500 women and children from Golden Valley and surrounding areas.

The shelter needs lighter weight pajamas in all youth sizes, from infant to teen. There is also a great need for women’s pajamas size 8 and smaller as well as size 3X and larger.

To help the GVFWC with this effort, please drop off new pajamas at the collection boxes in Golden Valley City Hall or the Police Station (7800 Golden Valley Rd) throughout October 2010.

The GVFWC plans to accept pajama donations through spring 2011 at other locations. Contact Dorree Adelmann at 763-231-2973 for more information about this or other GVFWC programs.

Golden Valley’s Envision Connection Project Bridge Builders will host the community’s third annual Lilac Planting Party Saturday, Oct 2, 8:30 am to 1 pm. The City is looking for anyone 16 or older who wants to help with the grassroots beautification project.

Volunteers can register starting at 8:30 am in the parking lot of 9010 Olson Memorial Hwy in Golden Valley. The planting will take place from 9 am to 1 pm on the north side of Hwy 55 between Boone Ave and Hwy 169. The event will conclude with a celebration lunch from 1 to 2 pm back at the registration location

Volunteers will need to bring gloves and a shovel. They can sign up the day of the event or in advance with Sandy Werts at 763-512-2314 or swerts@goldenvalleymn.gov.

Last October, volunteers gathered to plant lilacs and other shrubs along Hwy 55 between Winnetka Ave and Glenwood Ave.

The Lilac Planting Party is the brainchild of Golden Valley resident Dwight Townes, a member of Golden Valley’s Envision Connection Project Bridge Builders. Bridge Builders is a community organization that gives individuals and groups a way to connect with others who share similar interests and then mobilize them to engage in beneficiary projects. Townes initiated a partnership between Golden Valley and the Minnesota Department of Transportation’s Community Roadside Landscaping Partnership Program to bring the project to fruition.

Golden Valley will have its 125th anniversary next year, and it’s not too soon to start thinking of ways to celebrate.

Golden Valley resident Marshall Tanick is spearheading a Bridge Builder’s group to start planning a series of celebratory events, with ideas ranging from student essay contests to historical programs to volunteer service activities. He also suggests tweaking some existing community activities to include an anniversary component.

But to pull this off, the group will need a lot of participation, lots of good ideas, and early-on organization. A Bridge Builder’s meeting was held Sept 22 to discuss planning these events; 14 people representing a variety of Golden Valley organizations attended. The group decided to hold a series of events throughout 2011 to celebrate Golden Valley’s 125th anniversary and will form a steering committee to meet in late October and finalize plans by mid-November.

If you’re interested in helping Golden Valley and its residents make the City’s 125th birthday a memorable one, contact Sandy Werts at swerts@goldenvalleymn.gov to be put on the group’s mailing list, or call her at 763-512-2341.
