2010 Bassett Creek Bank Stabilization Project

In 2010-2011, the Bassett Creek Water Management Commission (BCWMC) continued its creek bank stabilization efforts with a project that minimized and helped control erosion on a stretch of Bassett Creek starting in Crystal and moving into Golden Valley through the Briarwood Nature Area to Regent Ave.

Location

  • 5,100 feet of Bassett Creek (partly in Crystal). The Golden Valley portion extended from the Golden Valley/Crystal boundary through the Briarwood Nature Area to Regent Ave.

Actions Taken

  • Created a buffer zone along the creek using a heavy layer of field stone. The buffer zone is a 15-foot wide area on both sides of the creek that stabilizes the soils and filters pollutants with the help of native plants, grasses, and riprap.
  • Stabilized some of the storm sewers that discharge into the channel.
  • Established new vegetation in areas disturbed by construction

Partners

  • Funded by the Bassett Creek Water Management Commission, Hennepin County (with a grant from the Clean Water Fund), and the Board of Water and Soil Resources (with a grant from the Clean Water Fund)
  • Constructed by the City of Golden Valley
