The City and its contractor Cardno Inc will perform a controlled burn at Briarwood Nature Are Thu, Dec 9 and other various dates throughout the next few months to remove invasive species. The area will then be restored with native grasses and wildflowers in spring 2022.
Update: The burn has been rescheduled to later this winter due to inadequate conditions.
As part of the project the contractor will remove the invasive species, create brush piles, and perform a controlled burn on site. A controlled burn is an important management tool that replicates the natural and beneficial process of fire, promoting the growth of native plants and controlling weeds. Burns are only conducted by trained crews after obtaining the proper permits and notifying the Fire Department and 911 dispatchers.
Burns must be conducted with proper wind conditions to minimize the amount of smoke that may blow across roadways or towards buildings. During the operation, you may see and smell smoke. Therefore, it is recommended that you keep your windows and doors closed during the controlled burn if possible. Because the burns are wind and weather dependent, the decision to complete a burn is often made 24 to 48 hours prior. On the day of each burn, Cardno Inc will go door to door to notify property owners immediately adjacent to the burn area.
