The City of Golden Valley and its Public Works Department received a Chloride Reduction Leadership Award from Bolton & Menk for its industry leading work in chloride reduction.
While the City follows best practices for winter maintenance operations, taking extra measures has been a priority for the Golden Valley City Council and Environmental Commission. These environmental impact reducing efforts include installing a weather and road sensor station to make better educated decisions on timing, application rates, and liquid additive selection and outfitting trucks with calibrated pumps to measure operation performance.
These measures have allowed the City to reduce its application rates of chloride by 50 pounds per lane mile and has decreased its use of granular road salt by 390 tons in the last 2.5 years, saving nearly $30,000.
