The Metropolitan Council Environmental Services is forming a task force to find solutions and educate the public about about the problem of flushing fats, oil, grease (FOG), and rags. All interested parties are encouraged to join the task force.
Flushing items like FOG, paper towels, disposable wipes, tissues, napkins, and other textiles can cause tens of thousands of dollars of damage to facilities that collect and pump wastewater and can create costly and messy sewer backups into homes and businesses.
The goal of the task force is to:
- identify ways Environmental Services can support local governments in addressing fats, oils, grease, and rag clogs in local sanitary sewers;
- determine if our community partners would support a regional strategy to address the problem with residents, businesses, and institutions;
- solicit input so we can develop a toolkit for local governments and businesses.
