The Golden Valley Police Department (GVPD) currently has 14 sworn officers and eight non-sworn community service officers. Of this number, eight sworn officers and all the community service officers are responding to 911 calls. The GVPD is currently budgeted for 31 sworn officers and eight community service officers. Due to privacy laws, the City cannot comment on the status of current or past employees.
"Our GVPD officers and staff are doing amazing work,” says Police Chief Virgil Green. “They have gone above and beyond expectations to make sure the community’s needs are being met as we work to recruit and train new officers.”
In the interim, the GVPD is also partnering with the Hennepin County Sheriff’s Office to provide added assistance in responding to 911 calls and is exploring additional options to further meet the community’s needs.
Additionally, over the last year, the Golden Valley Fire Department (GVFD) has been transitioning to a duty crew staffing model. The result is that they are responding to more 911 medical calls, which make up approximately 75 percent of all 911 calls.
“We have always worked closely with the police department to serve the community, and I appreciate the staff’s teamwork and sharing of responsibilities,” says Fire Chief John Crelly. “We are continuously assessing how to best serve our community to make sure those who live, work, and play in our city are safe and well served."
