Deadline For Grade School Historical Essay Contest Is Oct 19

Fifth and sixth graders have until Oct 19 to enter the historical essay contest sponsored by Golden Valley’s 125th Anniversary Planning Team. Winners will have their essays posted on the Golden Valley City website and will receive $50 for first prize and $25 for second prize.

Contestants in the Golden Valley Turns 125 Historical Essay Contest must reside or go to school in Golden Valley and must be in 5th or 6th grade during the 2011-2012 academic year. Homeschooled students in comparable grades are also eligible.

Essays may be on any topic that relates to Golden Valley’s history. Ideas and resources are available at the Golden Valley Historical Society or Golden Valley Library. Essays will be judged on originality and presentation (including grammar and spelling). Sources should be cited generally, such as “Mr Smith at Golden Valley Historical Society.”

All essays should be between 500 to 600 words and presented in a neat and legible format (double-spaced, typed preferred). Work should be done independently. Only one entry per person. Attach entry form to the back of the essay and mail to: Sandy Werts, Brookview Community Center, 200 Brookview Parkway, Golden Valley, MN  55426.

Entries are due October 19, 2011. Winners will be announced by November 15, 2011.
