Three Community Events Offer Opportunities To Volunteer and Engage
September 13, 2013
Three upcoming events in Golden Valley provide opportunities for community engagement and volunteerism. The events were conceived and planned by Golden Valley’s Envision Connection Project Bridge Builders group, which is comprised of people, institutions, organizations, or businesses who want to connect with others to improve the community or share similar interests.
Lilac Planting Party
The sixth annual Lilac Planting Party on Saturday, Sept 28, brings people together to implement a vision of lilacs, shrubs, and flowers along the sides of Hwy 55 through Golden Valley. This year volunteers will restore lilac beds disturbed by recent construction/rehabilitation of the MCES sanitary sewer system along the north side of Hwy 55 between Douglas Dr and Glenwood Ave.
Volunteers will meet at the Welcome Center, 6681 Country Club Dr (Gurstel Chargo). Registration is 8:30 – 9 am and planting is from 9 am – 1 pm, followed by a celebration lunch until 2 pm. Individuals and groups are welcome; register online.
This grass-roots community beautification effort is a collaboration between Bridge Builders, the City of Golden Valley, and the Minnesota Department of Transportation’s Community Roadside Landscaping Partnership Program.
Valley Volunteer Day
The third annual Valley Volunteer Day on Saturday, Sept 28, was planned and coordinated by a group of volunteers to fulfill needs around the community. Activities this year include:
- buckthorn busting from 9 am – 2 pm at the Golden Valley Historical Society, 6731 Golden Valley Rd
- pumpkin painting from 9 am – 2 pm at Peaceful Valley Montessori Academy, 5530 Golden Valley Rd
- trail clearing from 9 – 11 am at the School of Engineering and Arts (SEA), 1751 Kelly Dr
- trash pickup from 9 – 11 am at Glenview Terrace Park, 2351 Zenith Ave N and St Croix Park, 5850 St Croix Ave N
Individuals and groups are welcome; register online.
Fall Raking Blitz
The Fall Raking Blitz, which will take place from Oct 24 – Nov 4, was planned by Neighbors Helping Neighbors, a Bridge Builders group of local churches and non-profit organizations whose goal is to match community volunteers with homeowners needing assistance with home maintenance.
Based on availability of volunteers, raking teams will be dispatched from Calvary Church, 7520 Golden Valley Rd, to homes that ask for service.
To schedule leaf-raking service: Call the Senior Community Services HOME Program at 952-746-4046 by Oct 19. Volunteers will rake and bag leaves and take them to the curb. Residents are responsible for providing biodegradable bags and arranging for disposal.
To help with the raking: Contact Volunteer Coordinator Sandy Werts at 763-593-2341 or sign up online. Groups and individuals are welcome. Students must be accompanied by an adult. Volunteers should dress for the weather and bring gloves, rakes, and any other equipment needed.
Neighbors Helping Neighbors is a collaboration between H.O.M.E., Calvary Lutheran Church, Valley Community Presbyterian Church, and PRISM, with support from the City of Golden Valley.
If you have questions about any of these volunteer activities, contact Golden Valley Volunteer Coordinator Sandy Werts at 763-512-2341 or email@example.com.
