GV Fire Dept. Raises $11,811 In Lung Association ‘Fight For Air’ Climb
February 25, 2014
On Feb 22, four Golden Valley Firefighters participated in the American Lung Association Fight for Air stair climb, a fund raiser that brought 38 fire departments and 266 firefighters to Minneapolis for the 31-story full fire-gear climb.
This was the eighth year Team Golden Valley participated, and the sixth year they were named the top fundraising team, raising $11,811. In the last eight years, Team Golden Valley has raised over $70,000 for the ALA.
For the third year, Golden Valley Fire and Chanhassen Fire battled it out to be the top fundraising team, with Golden Valley edging out Chanhassen by $400.
“It’s all part of a friendly rivalry we have each year to see which department can raise the most money,” says Stephen Baker, fire education specialist. “The loser has to buy pizza for the winning team.”
Together, the Golden Valley and Chanhassen teams raised $23,217 for the American Lung Association. Golden Valley fire fighter Ken Bence was the No. 1 fundraiser of the event, with $7,391 raised. The participants from Team Golden Valley Fire also included family and friends of firefighters. They were: Steve Baker, Noah Baker, Ryan Baker, Ken Bence, Chris Gemlo, Jake Gemlo, Lisa Gemlo, and Jeff Piper.
