Douglas Dr To Close Oct 19 Between Duluth St And Golden Valley Rd For Paving

Work on Douglas Dr is marching south towards Hwy 55, with closures scheduled for Oct 19 between Duluth St and Golden Valley Rd so crews can pave the final layer of asphalt.

Duluth Street To Golden Valley Road

Crews are finishing the sidewalks along the southbound lanes of Douglas Dr (County Rd 102) between Duluth St (County Rd 66) and Golden Valley Rd. Once completed, this segment of road will feature sidewalks along the southbound lanes and shared pedestrian and bicycle trails along northbound lanes.

Starting Thursday, Oct 19, Douglas Dr will close between Duluth St and Golden Valley Rd to pave the final layer of asphalt, or wear course. Once paving is complete, the road will reopen to traffic as crews continue to work on:

  • installing new street light fixtures
  • placing top soil and sod
  • striping the roadway
  • completing touch-up and clean-up work to prepare the road for winter travel

Paving is expected to take up to two days. Start and end dates are weather dependent.

Local residents on Douglas Dr will be notified of the work with instructions on access during paving operations. Residents and businesses in the area should also be aware that this work will be noisy, and there will be vibrations. Paving is loud and involves a lot of truck operations. The vibrating roller used to smooth out and compact the pavement often shakes the ground.

During paving operations, all traffic should use the marked detour that follows Hwy 55, Hwy 100 and Duluth St.

Golden Valley Road Intersection To Frontage Rd

Recently, crews paved the first two layers of asphalt at the Golden Valley Rd roundabout, and the roundabout fully opened to traffic. There will be one short-term closure when final paving and striping happens in the area.

Later this week, weather permitting, crews will pave pedestrian and bicycle trails along both sides of Douglas Dr between Golden Valley Rd and Frontage Rd.
The Luce Line Trail connection will continue to be available for trail users during this work.

Frontage Rd To Hwy 55

Over the last few weeks, crews have made progress removing and replacing underground utility lines. Underground utility work, which includes water main and storm sewer lines, is expected to be complete by the end of next week, weather permitting. Grading work will follow.

Country Club Dr

Last week, crews poured new curbs and gutters and paved the first layer of asphalt on the new cul-de-sac, as well as the entry and exit access points at the eastern end of the street.

However, the road will remain closed to through traffic as crews continue with work on:

  • paving the wear, or final, layer
  • striping the roadway
  • pouring sidewalks along both sides of Country Club Dr
  • pouring medians at the entry and exit access points
  • placing sod along the boulevard
  • completing touch-up and clean-up work to prepare the road for winter travel

Weather permitting, the entry and access points to and from Hwy 55 will open by late October/early November.

Work Zone Road Conditions

Please remember, throughout the work zone crews have removed pavement and are working with dirt. This means the roads will be more challenging to drive through. While we continue to try to keep things drivable, weather – especially heavy rains – can create challenges. We appreciate everyone’s patience and understanding. If you have questions or concerns regarding the road conditions, please contact the project hotline at 612-543-3485.

Getting Around And Staying Safe

You can still travel around this area, including to get to local businesses. It’s important to follow speed limits and signs, and stay alert, including during evenings and weekends. Traffic changes, construction crews, equipment, and work areas near the roadway will require extra attention from road users.

The official detour for through traffic uses Duluth St (County Rd 66), Hwy 100, and Hwy 55. There are alternative routes for local traffic, including Winnetka Ave (County Rd 156), Medicine Lake Rd (County Rd 70), and the completed segments of Douglas Dr.
