Preliminary Work To Begin April 12 On Golden Valley Road Bridge

Starting Thursday, April 12, construction crews will begin removing trees inside the county right-of-way along the Golden Valley Road Bridge over Bassett Creek. The work will be done during daytime hours and is expected to take two days, weather permitting. Expect travel delays and some dust and noise.

The trees are being removed ahead of Xcel Energy’s 2018 utility relocation work, which will be completed before the Golden Valley Road Bridge replacement project starts in mid-May.

Due to the nature of the work, traffic will be reduced to a single lane in both directions, with flaggers, signs, and barriers to guide people driving through. Expect delays, and please use caution as you travel through the area.

About The Golden Valley Road Bridge Project

Hennepin County, in partnership with the City of Golden Valley, will replace the century-old bridge on Golden Valley Rd over Bassett Creek. Located just west of Theodore Wirth Parkway, the bridge will be reconstructed with design and functional improvements, including:

  • new road surface offering a smoother ride
  • new modern design, including new ornamental railings along both sides of the bridge
  • adaptable design to accommodate possible future upgrades for people walking and biking
  • updates to meet current safety requirements

Bridge To Close Starting In Early June

Construction is scheduled to begin in mid-May, and work is expected to be completed in October. Due to the nature of the construction, the Golden Valley Road Bridge will need to close to all traffic for an anticipated time frame of early June through late August. The closure includes the roadway, bike lanes and sidewalks. More information will be provided about the closure as it nears.

Thank you for your patience and understanding as we begin our efforts to provide a new bridge designed to meet today’s needs and last for years to come.
