Severe Weather Awareness Week: Tornadoes
Springtime is tornado season in Minnesota. Follow theses tips to help stay safe in the event of a tornado.
- Get in the basement or under some sort of sturdy protection, like a table, or cover yourself with a mattress or a sleeping bag.
- While taking shelter, stay away from windows and use your arms to cover your head and neck.
- If you are outdoors, seek shelter in a sturdy building if possible. If not, lie flat and face-down on low ground, protecting the back of your head with your arms, away from cars and trees.
- If you are driving and are able to flee the tornado, do so by driving away from its path by moving at right angles to the tornado. Otherwise, park the car as quickly and safely as possible, get out, and seek shelter in a sturdy building.
