City Council Reviews 2020 Proposed Budget And Levy
August 20, 2019
Each August the City Council reviews the City’s Proposed General Fund Budget for the coming year in preparation for certifying the preliminary tax levy in September. The tax levy is the amount of property taxes needed to make bond payments and fund City services, such as police and fire, street and park maintenance, planning, and zoning, to name a few.
The budget process matches estimated revenue with projected expenditures to determine the General Fund Property Tax portion of the total City tax levy. The General Fund Property Tax is the primary revenue source for the General Fund. The total City tax levy includes amounts needed to operate the General Fund and pay Debt Service.
The amount of tax levy the City Council certifies at its Sept 17 meeting cannot be increased but can be reduced. The Council considers approval of the final 2020-2021 budget and levy in December.
