City Hopes To Boost Drone Usage After Receiving FAA Certificate

Golden Valley recently became one of very few cities in Minnesota to have a Certificate of Waiver or Authorization (COA) for using drones, thus authorizing the expansion of drone usage in the City. The COA was issued to the Golden Valley Police Department (GVPD) by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).

Prior to receiving the COA, the City of Golden Valley had 14 employees with drone licensees, including eight GVPD staff and three Golden Valley Fire staff.

The goal is to train more City employees so drones can be used in other areas of operation, like spotting rust on the top of the water tower, identifying flooding in local waterways, performing search and rescue, and assisting in the process of extinguishing structure fires.

For more information on the COA, visit the FAA website or contact Golden Valley Police Sergeant Randy Mahlen at 763-512-2511.
