Brookview Lawn Bowling Switches To Artificial Turf

Brookview is replacing its existing natural turf on the lawn bowling green with artificial turf. The project began April 14 and is expected to be completed by April 24.

The primary goal of removing the natural turf is to limit the time and costs of maintenance. Brookview staff struggles to keep it playable due to significant use patterns. Each spring the turf needed approximately 4–6 weeks of grow time before lawn bowling could start. The green would also close early in the fall for repair and to prepare for winter, similar to golf greens.

The new artificial turf will allow lawn bowling to begin as soon as weather allows in the spring and will allow play to stretch late into fall. It will also allow for more winter amenities to be added to the surface, like pub curling, without fear of damage.

Golf maintenance staff estimates an annual $10,000–$12,000 maintenance cost savings by replacing the natural turf with artificial turf.

Why This Project And Not Others?

Although some projects around the City are being canceled or postponed due to the COVID-19 outbreak, this project stayed on schedule because the contractor had already been hired, and delaying or canceling the project was not practical.
