Outdoor Winter Recreation Begins In Golden Valley

As more snow comes and the temperatures gets colder, the City’s outdoor winter recreation opportunities are starting to open for the season.

Skating Rinks

Park Maintenance has been working since mid-December to establish rink ice on outdoor turf at parks through out the City. However, fluctuating temperatures, ground frost and snow events determine how quickly rinks can be established. Maintenance staff will continue to work every day to establish rink ice. Some rinks will get established before others due to ground frost and weather conditions.

The City is hoping to have most of its rinks open by the first week of January. Learn more.

Multi-Use Winter Recreation Trail

Before Brookview’s multi-use winter trail can be first groomed, the trail needs a 4–6 inch snow base. Once the base is down, Brookview Golf Maintenance staff generally groom the trail on Mon, Wed, and Fri using a Kubota utility vehicle equipped with snow tracks, a pull behind trail groomer, and a ski track setter.

The initial trail loop is lighted by solar powered LED lights in a partnership with Three Rivers Park District. The extended trail across Bassett Creek and to the northwest section of the golf course is not lighted. The trail is maintained to provide winter recreation opportunities like cross-country skiing, Skijoring, snowshoeing, and winter trail walking.

The trail is now open for public use. Learn more.
