Severe thunderstorms can bring heavy winds, lightning, and large hail. Winds in these storms can reach 58 mph or more, and gusts of over 100 mph can cause significant destruction similar to tornadoes.
Hail Hazards
While most hail is small, it can grow to the size of baseballs or even grapefruit, costing millions in damage each year. Large hailstones can fall faster than 100 mph, and they have been known to cause severe injuries and fatalities.
Lightning Safety
- If you hear thunder, lightning is close enough to strike.
- Immediately seek shelter in a substantial building or an enclosed vehicle.
- Stay inside for 30 minutes after the last sound of thunder.
- Never shelter under trees or near metal objects during a storm.
Remember, no place outdoors is safe when thunderstorms are in the area.
