Programs are available to help residents living in or near floodplains.
Flood Insurance
Climate change is bringing more extreme weather events, including heavy rains and flooding. Nearly 40 percent of all flood damage claims occur outside the federally-mapped floodplain. First, work with your insurance company to review and assess your flood risk. Then, take the following steps to help safeguard your home:
- landscape your yard so storm water flows away from your home
- check and maintain your sump pump and consider a backup
- install a water alarm to monitor your basement
- keep storm drains and waterways clear of debris
Flood Information
City staff can offer free information and technical advice regarding:
- flooding and drainage problems
- on-site flood protection assistance
- whether your property is in the FEMA floodplain, floodway, or other flood areas
- historical flood information
