Every minute counts during an emergency, so ensuring that fire, ambulance, and police personnel can easily identify your address makes a significant difference in response times.
Residents are required to make sure their house numbers are clearly visible from the street. Key guidelines for effective house numbering include:
- making sure address numbers are in alphabetical letters or Arabic numerals & avoiding script or spelled-out numbers
- displaying house numbers on the front of the dwelling in a location visible from the street
- ensuring numbers are a minimum of four inches high and in a contrasting color compared to their background (brass or bronze numbers may be difficult to see)
- placing the numbers on a gate post, fence, mailbox, or other suitable location that ensures visibility from all directions if the dwelling is situated more than 45 feet from the lot line
- preventing any obstruction of the numbers by shrubs, trees, or decorations like flags
