Golden Valley Recognizes Black History Month

Current News Posted on February 05, 2025

February is Black History Month, which celebrates the powerful, transformative contributions the Black community has made and continues to make in arts, music, law, literature, science, education, entertainment, politics, and other endeavors.

At its Feb 4 meeting, the Golden Valley City Council passed a proclamation recognizing Black History Month and calling on the community to acknowledge the social construct of race and its historical use to dehumanize, brutalize, and systematically oppress the Black community. The proclamation also encourages residents to confront racial inequities and work toward liberation and celebration.

The 2025 Black History Month theme, “African Americans and Labor,” was established by the Association for the Study of African American Life and History.

The Story Of Black History Month

In 1926, Dr Carter G Woodson, a Harvard scholar, established the observance of Negro History week to call upon educational institutions and communities to recognize the vital contributions of Black Americans. The focus on Black history grew with the various movements for equity and justice, specifically the Civil Rights Movement, expanding and evolving from one week to Black History Month.
