Golden Valley’s Sweet Potato Comfort Pie (SPCP) is hosting two events to celebrate Juneteenth, a federal holiday commemorating the emancipation of enslaved Africans/African Americans from Texas in 1865—two years after the Emancipation Proclamation was issued in 1863.
5th Annual Sweet Potato Pie Showcase
Join SPCP at Crayon Kelly Agency Gallery (1628 West End Blvd, St Louis Park) on Wednesday, June 4, from 6 to 8 pm for an evening of storytelling and sweet potato pie. Participants are encouraged to bring a pie and share the story behind it (why they made it and what it means to them).
This event is not a competition but a celebration of culture and connection. Each pie maker will have up to three minutes to share their “pie story.”
Sign up online to bring a pie at https://forms.gle/S3X3wc8A45MHAtF39.
Kumbayah: The Juneteenth Story – Special Edition
Written by SCPC founder and Golden Valley resident Rose McGee and directed by Golden Valley Mayor Roslyn Harmon, this theatrical production offers a reflection on freedom through immersive storytelling. Rather than following a traditional narrative structure, the performance emphasizes symbolism and historical context through African artifacts, Juneteenth quilts, costumes, and legal documents.
This production is free and open to the public. It will be held Friday, June 27, from 2 to 3:30 pm, at The O’Shaughnessy St Catherine University (2005 Randolph Ave, St Paul).
