Even though peak storm season is winding down, fall storms can still bring hail, wind, and another risk—roofing scams. These scams often pop up after severe weather when homeowners are vulnerable and repairs feel urgent.
How To Spot A Roofing Scam
Scammers may go door-to-door offering “free inspections,” claiming they noticed damage, or are working on a neighbor’s home. They might pressure you into signing an “authorization form,” which is often a binding contract, or even fabricate damage during the inspection.
Before You Hire A Contractor
Protect yourself by:
- asking for a state-issued license number (not just a registration)
- verifying the license at dli.mn.gov
- asking for references and a Minnesota business address
- avoiding contractors who request full payment upfront or use high-pressure tactics
