Missing Middle Study Will Expand Housing Options

Current News Posted on December 01, 2025

Golden Valley's Missing Middle Housing Study will explore smaller, multi-unit housing types such as duplexes, triplexes, townhomes, and courtyard apartments as options to help fill the gap between single-family homes and large apartment buildings, offering more choices for residents of all ages and incomes.

The City hired Bolton & Menk, a Minneapolis-based firm, to analyze zoning, infrastructure, and market trends while gathering community input. The study will also identify barriers to development and propose strategies to encourage housing that is both affordable and consistent with neighborhood character.

Community members are invited to take a brief eight question survey to share feedback on the Missing Middle Housing Study. The survey is available on the City website at www.goldenvalleymn.gov/820/Missing-Middle-Housing-Study. Final date to provide input is Dec 31.

Results from the study and survey will guide future zoning updates, design standards, and policies as the City prepares its 2050 Comprehensive Plan. Community members will have opportunities to share feedback throughout the project. For more information, email planning@goldenvalleymn.gov.
