Golden Valley will send nine new recruits to the West Suburban Fire Academy (WSFA) this January to begin their careers as paid on-call firefighters.
Along with firefighters from the Maple Grove, Plymouth, and West Metro Fire Departments, the recruits spend 250 hours in training specifically designed to prepare new firefighters to meet National Fire Protection Association standards. They attend this training while continuing to work their primary jobs, care for families, etc.
Training includes a mixture of classroom time and hands-on exercises where firefighters learn about topics ranging from vehicle extrication to dealing with hazardous materials to, of course, firefighting.
Upon graduation from the WSFA later this year, each recruit will have Firefighter I and II and Hazardous Materials Operations state certifications. This fall they will attend 140 hours in Emergency Medical Technician classes and earn their certifications.
