Construction season is around the corner. Here are a few local projects to watch for.
City Projects
Zane Ave & Lindsay St Reconstruction
Reconstruction of Zane Ave (Olson Memorial Frontage Rd to Golden Valley Rd) will include upgrading underground infrastructure (sanitary sewer, water main, and storm sewer) and installation of a new sidewalk. The Lindsay St reconstruction project (Zane Ave to Lilac Dr) will be finalized with sod installation. Work will begin in spring and is expected to end in fall.
This will mark the completion of the Golden Valley’s Pavement Management Program (PMP), which has reconstructed every City street over the past 30 years. Watch for more information about the PMP, as well as next steps, in the May/June CityNews and on the City website.
Mill & Overlay
Two mill and overlay projects (10th Ave from Winnetka Ave to Mendelssohn Ave, plus Lewis Rd, and Boone Ave from Plymouth Ave to Hwy 55) will include pavement improvements, sidewalk repairs, pedestrian crossing upgrades, and storm sewer repairs. Work is anticipated to start in summer and run through fall. CenterPoint Energy will start separate work in May ahead of the City's project.
Another mill and overlay project will cover all roads south of Hwy 55 and west of Winnetka Ave, including Wisconsin Ave and Vermont Ave south of I-394. Depending on construction bids, General Mills Blvd from Hwy 55 to Harold Ave may be included.
Watermain Replacements & Relocation
Watermain will be replaced this spring along Hwy 55 between Boone Ave and Wisconsin Ave. A majority of the work will take place in the boulevard on the north side of Hwy 55, with some work anticipated on Golden Valley Rd.
Watermain will be relocated this summer along the north side of Hwy 55 between Schaper Rd and the CPKC rail crossing east of Ottawa Ave. The relocation will allow for placement of MnDOT’s shared-use trail. A short length of sanitary sewer will also be relocated as part of the project.
Gate Valve Replacement
The City will replace gate valves and repair manholes, catch basins, and curbs between Winnetka Ave and Pennsylvania Ave, south of Western Ave.
8200 Golden Valley Rd Development
As part of the development at 8200 Golden Valley Rd, the medians between Wisconsin Ave and Golden Valley Dr will be reconfigured. CenterPoint Energy will upgrade its system between Golden Valley Dr and Winnetka Ave, requiring temporary closures along Golden Valley Rd. The City will communicate additional information as details are finalized.
MnDOT Projects
I-394 Bridge Reconstruction: Starting in summer 2025 and continuing through fall 2026, the project will repair 34 bridges and ramps along I-394 and I-94 between downtown Minneapolis and Hwy 100. Most of the project area is in Minneapolis, but there will be some traffic impacts in Golden Valley. Anticipate directional and weekend closures.
Hwy 55 Trail: Updates to trail infrastructure will include reconstructed sidewalks, new ramps, and improved crosswalks that meet ADA standards; storm sewer work to improve drainage and reduce flooding; new pedestrian and bicycle connections; and new roadway lighting at several intersections.
Betty Crocker Dr At Hwy 169: The mill and overlay project will include reconfiguring turn lanes to Hwy 169 ramps, restriping for a bike trail, and installing new traffic signals and pedestrian facilities.
Hennepin County Projects
Winnetka Ave Pedestrian Improvements: Project will include new sidewalk and pedestrian facilities along Winnetka Ave from Hwy 55 to Orkla Ave and railroad crossing repairs at 10th Ave. CenterPoint Energy will complete work in this area as well.
Three Rivers Park District
Golden Valley Rd Trail: This collaboration between Three Rivers Park District, Hennepin County, and the City includes a mill and overlay, a new trail, traffic signals, and pedestrian facilities between Douglas Dr and Theodore Wirth Pkwy.
