Weathering The Storm: Extreme Heat

Current News Posted on April 11, 2025

Extreme heat kills more people than any other weather event. Heatwaves are particularly dangerous and can lead to heatstroke, dehydration, and death. In Minnesota, extreme heat has caused more fatalities than any other weather-related disaster.

Heat Safety Tips

  • Stay hydrated: Drink water regularly, even if you’re not thirsty. Avoid alcohol and sugary drinks.
  • Stay cool: Spend time in air-conditioned buildings. If you don’t have air conditioning, visit public places like malls or libraries.
  • Check on vulnerable people: infants, elderly individuals, and those with chronic illnesses are at greater risk during heatwaves.

Heat Alert Levels

  • Excessive Heat Outlook: Issued 3-7 days in advance when heat is possible.
  • Excessive Heat Watch: Issued 24-72 hours before a heatwave.
  • Excessive Heat Warning: Issued when dangerous heat is imminent.
