Take Steps Now To Reduce Flood Risk

Current News Posted on May 21, 2025

Due to extreme weather events caused by climate change, nearly 40 percent of flood damage claims come from outside federally mapped floodplains. First, protect yourself by reviewing your flood risk with your insurance provider. Then, take the following steps to better protect your home:

  • Direct stormwater away from your house.
  • Maintain your sump pump and consider adding a backup.
  • Install a water alarm to monitor for leaks or flooding.
  • Keep storm drains and nearby waterways clear of debris.
  • Check with the City before making significant changes to your yard.

City staff can also provide free onsite visits, information, and technical advice on flooding and drainage problems, flood protection strategies, and whether your property falls within a FEMA-designated floodplain, other flood area, or has a history of flooding.

To support larger flood risk reduction efforts, Golden Valley offers a Flood Mitigation Cost Share Program. Eligible property owners can receive up to 40 percent reimbursement (up to $50,000) for flood protection projects such as landscaping or structural improvements. The deadline to apply is October 1, 2025.
