The City of Golden Valley’s Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Commission (DEIC) is hosting an August 8 community forum titled “Hate Has No Home Here: Transphobia In The United States Today.” The forum will be held 5-6:30 pm in the Wirth Lake Room at Brookview, 316 Brookview Parkway S, Golden Valley.
According to the American Civil Liberties Union, roughly 520 anti-LGBTQ+ bills have been proposed across the US in 2024, with many specifically targeting transgender and gender nonconforming people. This session aims to provide a place to learn about barriers the transgender and gender-nonconforming community face as well as ways to effectively combat transphobia.
Ellie Krug and Nicki Hangsleben are the speakers for the event. Krug, a writer and lawyer, was the first Iowa lawyer to ever transition genders and one of the few attorneys nationally to try jury cases in separate genders. She later relocated to the Twin Cities where she served as the founding executive director of a legal nonprofit. Hangsleben is the executive director and founder of QUEERSPACE Collective, an organization that creates spaces for LGBTQ+ youth to feel safe and empowered to be their true selves.
This event is the third in the “Hate Has No Home Here” series hosted by the Golden Valley DEIC. The first session in April focused on antisemitism and the session in July focused on Islamophobia.
