Building/Remodeling Permits

Building Permits are required for a number of home building, remodeling, or repair projects. Apply online through the City's ePermits system.

  • To find permits issued from 1995 to present, click "Search for Permits" and fill in the house number and street address of the property.

View the ProjectDox Applicant Quick Guide (PDF).

For remodeling, alterations, or repairs, the City requires plans showing dimensions of areas included in project (scale: 1/4 inch = 1 foot).

For new construction or additions, the City requires:

  • plans showing window sizes, room sizes, ceiling heights, doors, exits, and stairways (1/4 inch = 1 foot)
  • survey certificate signed by a Minnesota licensed surveyor (building must be shown on survey)

Some projects require permits for tree preservation and/or stormwater management. You must obtain those permits before the City will issue a Building Permit.

  • Mechanical, plumbing, and electrical inspections are required before scheduling a building inspection.
  • Rough-in and final inspections for mechanical, plumbing, and building are provided by City Building Inspectors. Schedule inspections 24 to 48 hours in advance by calling the City Inspections Department at 763-593-8090 (please have your permit number available). Office hours are 8 am to 4:30 pm, Monday through Friday.
  • All electrical inspections are provided by an independent sub-contractor. The City does not schedule these inspections. To schedule an electrical inspection, go to https://www.tokleinspections.com/ or call 763-390-9255.
  • All inspection times are approximate.
